Adam was the first human created by Allah and appointed as a vicegerent on earth. When the angels heard of his creation, they were concerned that he might cause corruption on earth, but Allah reminded them that He knew what they did not. Adam was taught the names of all things—an honor that elevated him with knowledge and awareness. When the angels were commanded to prostrate before him, they all did so except Iblis, who grew arrogant and disobeyed. Adam and his spouse Eve were then placed in Paradise; they were free to enjoy its blessings but were told not to approach a particular tree. Allah clearly warned them that Satan was their open enemy.
