Hudaybiyyah was, outwardly, a retreat—yet in reality one of the greatest turning points in Islamic history. The Prophet ﷺ and his companions set out unarmed from Madinah with the simple intention of performing ‘umrah. They wished only to visit the Kaaba. But the Quraysh insisted on preventing their entry. Tension rose, messengers were sent back and forth, misunderstandings occurred, and in the end a treaty emerged that seemed sharply against the Muslims. The companions felt their hearts constrict, for the trial of patience had reached its peak. Yet Allah called this very event “an evident victory.”
